The call to Evangelisation
Over 60 delegates participated in an Alpha training event in Assisi on the 14th-15th June, Italy’s first official national Alpha conference.
The Alpha Italia website was launched on the Saturday, providing the first online presence for Alpha in Italy. Check it out here italia.alpha.org/
The event was a great opportunity for those wishing to launch Alpha in their parishes to receive training and delegates were able to connect with and share ideas and experiences with other Alpha leaders in Italy. The training consisted of talks such as ‘Why evangelise?’ and ‘How to lead a small group’, as well as workshops on Alpha - Youth and the Marriage Course. Participants also experienced a typical Alpha evening on the Saturday night with a meal, talk and small group discussion, followed by an evening of worship lead by the Milano worship group The Dreamers.
On Sunday, delegates were invited to Mass at the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli in Assisi. This is one of the churches St Francis began to restore before truly understanding the Lord’s call on his life: ‘Francis, rebuild my Church'.He later realised that this call was a mission to re-evangelise the 13th century Church and bring it back to the Gospel.
Answering the question ‘Why evangelise?’ Don Francesco from Perugia quoted Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium:
'In virtue of their baptism, all the members of the People of God have become missionary disciples (cf. Mt 28:19).[…] Every Christian is a missionary to the extent that he or she has encountered the love of God in Christ Jesus: we no longer say that we are 'disciples' and 'missionaries', but rather that we are always 'missionary disciples'. If we are not convinced, let us look at those first disciples, who, immediately after encountering the gaze of Jesus, went forth to proclaim him joyfully: "We have found the Messiah!" (Jn 1:41). […] So what are we waiting for?'
